Emma is a highly trained and experienced Occupational Therapist working in multiple paediatric roles since graduating from the University of South Australia in 2001. She has worked in government roles for disability and health as well as private practice and not-for-profit organisations across multiple Australian states. Emma has worked in child development teams assisting with diagnosis and most recently worked alongside the acclaimed Paediatrician's at Paeds in a Pod in Brisbane where she was regularly consulted for formal and informal assessments towards diagnosis and treatment of kids with ASD, ADHD and/or anxiety. She has direct 1:1 clinic therapy experience as well as having worked in community key worker and coaching capacities utilizing both top-down and bottom-up approaches. Some of Emma's favourite therapy modalities are the DIR/Floortime model (level 2 training), SOS and STEPS feeding interventions, the Co-Op approach for motor skills development, self-regulation development thru mindfulness/zones of regulation/interoception curriculum training, as well as having a passion for helping children with toileting issues and sleep problems. Emma loves and understands the unique needs of working with neurodiverse children (i.e. diagnoses of ASD, ADHD and/or anxiety) and enjoys helping families understand their child's developmental profile so they can feel empowered to help their child set and achieve goals in their everyday interactions. She knows that all families are unique and that therapy needs to be individualized as well as informed by research. Emma values building relationships in the therapy context and highly values the contribution of all those who know and work with a child. She strongly believes in open communication between parents and therapists to maximize the therapy experience for a child.
Emma believes strongly in life-long learning and regularly engages in professional development to keep her skills and knowledge up to date with the latest research. She has presented at many childcare centres, conferences and to teacher groups on a range of topics from supporting young children with ASD to sensory processing, developing toileting skills to fine motor skills and handwriting.
Outside of work, Emma is a Mum to two amazing children. She credits much of her learning over the past decade to the experiences she has gained not only from professional training but from the day-to-day experiences she has with her own unique children as they grow and play. On weekends, Emma enjoys trips to the beach for fish and chips, a swim in a pool and BBQs with friends.
